About Grosmont

Cycling Festival Weekend

Monday 18th July 2016

Wow, what a fantastic weekend!  Well done everyone - another great community effort.

The race included a number of cyclists from outside the UK and a European Flag was painted on the approach to Grosmont presumably to reflect this. Sadly, however, someone has defaced this flag, putting a cross through it and writing "UK RULES OK!" underneath. We understand, thankfully, that this defacing was not done before the race. Our village prides itself on its inclusiveness and in no way condones these sentiments nor is it considered acceptable. Monmouthshire Council have been contacted and will hopefully be removing the graffiti as soon as possible.
Also, someone took one of the Grosmont flags on Saturday night, 16 July. We would very much like to have it returned if anyone knows of its whereabouts.
On a more positive note, the woman in Monmouthshire Council said her husband was a Marshall for the race and he was extremely impressed with the way Grosmont had supported the race and decorated the village.
Someone has quoted on VeloUk: "Never seen a village get behind a bike race like Grosmont did on Sunday in Wales. More races there perhaps."
