SHROVE TUESDAY WHIST DRIVE

Thursday 18th February 2010

Shrove Tuesday Whist Drive

The weather is never predictable on Shrove Tuesday.  This year the evening was cold and frosty with fog later.  Despite this, a goodly crowd assembled for the traditional Whist Drive.  They came from Welsh Newton, Skenfrith, Monmouth, Cross Ash, Ewyas Harold and of course our own village of Grosmont.

It was a very pleasant evening with lots of chatter and serious whist playing.  The whole evening was well organised by the M.C., Richard Brierly.  As it was Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) delicious pancakes, with other refreshments, were served at half time.  The pancakes had been made by Witek and Linda - thanks to them.

To play 24 hands of cards takes a considerable time.  It was after 10.30pm when the whist drive ended.

The winners were:

First Lady - Sylvia Jones
Second Lady - Ralph Leech
Third Lady - Witek Mintowt-Cycz
First Gent - Russell James
Second Gent - Richard Brierly
Third Gent - Jeannette Farr
("Lady" or "Gent" depended on where one sat!)

This year we gave a prize to the player who is still in full time education.  As there was only one youngster involved, Michael Farr won the prize.

We made a record amount of money, £620!!!!, which will go towards the Grosmont Church Restoration Fund.  If there are any other donations not yet handed in, Mary Thomas will be pleased to accept them.

Many people must be thanked for their efforts in making the evening a success.  First and foremost - Mary Thomas who has worked tirelessly getting donations, raffle prizes and providing the refreshments.  Thanks to John McCready, Megan Hounsome and the Rev. Jean Prosser for helping with the washing up.

This Shrove Tuesday Whist Drive has become a tradition in Grosmont, and this year lived up to its reputation.  The evening ended with the Rev. Jean Prosser presenting the prizes and giving a vote of thanks, before everybody headed off home, after scraping the frost from the windscreen of their cars.
