PIG People In Grosmont

Grosmont has its very own pig-rearing group, which had two years successfully rearing four litters of piglets to our Tamworth sows.

Then the decision was taken to sell the sows and try rearing weaners. Our first bunch were a Tamworth/Gloucester Old Spot cross and were very successful.  Our second group are a Landrace/Welsh cross and we are about to find out whether they can keep up the excellent standard!

The aim of the group is to produce free-range pork and charcuterie for its members. It works as a co-operative: members contribute to the start-up costs and then cover the running costs by buying a share of the meat, with group members sharing feeding and husbandry duties. It is very much a community-based project: we enjoy being part of a venture that is self-supporting and guarantees an alternative source of quality, hand-reared meat, whilst learning new skills along the way.
