Keeping St Nicholas at the Heart of the Community

The Restoration Project

£7,000 still needs to be raised.

St Nicholas Church urgently needs work to restore and maintain this magnificent building. We have resolved to:

Restore the fabric of the church and safeguard its future;
Comply with legislation for disabled access and health and safety; and
Ensure the building is maintained in future for church and community use.

The Restoration Group is responsible for scoping the extent of repairs to the building, for claiming grants to restore St Nicholas Church, and for project managing the work.

The spire is unstable and needs partial re-building, the roof and timbers need treatment to stop beetle attack and water ingress, soakaways and Victorian drains need re-building to prevent water getting in at ground level and the interior plaster needs replacing.  These repairs will amount to over £250,000 for the most urgent works.  Further funding will then be raised to make the nave suitable for community use and make provision for future maintenance.

St. Nicholas Church parochial church council gratefully acknowledges support for this restoration from CADW, The Church in Wales, Garfield Weston Foundation, The Headley Trust, The Heritage Lottery Fund, Monmouth Diocese, the National Churches Trust, The Welsh Church Fund and local people.

The Heritage Lottery Fund have awarded the sum of £90,8000 and CADW the sum of £103,352.  Grants have been secured from the Headley Trust (£4,000),  the Church in Wales (£10,000), Garfield Weston Trust (£5,000), National Churches Fund (£10,000), Welsh Churches Trust (£1,000) and Monmouth Diocese (£2,500).

The local community has already raised significant funds from gift days, events and other fundraising iniatives, but much remains to be done, and we welcome all offers of funds or help in fundraising.

During 2008, church members also raised the cost of central heating in the area of worship, which was completed in March 2009. The old gas heaters, which are so damaging to the fabric of the building, have been removed.
